Some 15 secondary school students from Sudbury’s École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur and Collège Notre-Dame will take part in a birthing ceremony of traditional Native drums on Friday, April 8, at 11:30 a.m. Members of the media are invited to attend this ceremony scheduled to take place at École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur, located at 261 Notre-Dame Avenue, in Sudbury.

Students and staff at École Ste-Marie (25 Marier St., Azilda) will take part in One Day Without Shoes Day on Tuesday, April 12, by taking part in awareness activities that will begin with a rally in the gymnasium at 9:15 a.m. and conclude at the end of the school day. Members of the media are invited to come and meet with the students at their school.

Some 150 young chess masters will meet in Wawa on Thursday, April 21, for the third Franco-Nord-Ouest Chess Tournament. The competition, hosted by Wawa’s École Saint-Joseph, will attract francophone students from the following Northwestern Ontario French Catholic and Public schools: École Saint-Joseph and École l’Escalade (Wawa), École Saint Nom de Jésus (Hornepayne), École St-Joseph and É.s. l’Orée des bois (Dubreuilville), École Sacré-Cœur and É.s.c. Trillium (Chapleau), École Notre-Dame-du-Sault and École Écho des Rapides (Sault Ste. Marie), and École Franco-Manitou (Manitowadge).

During its recent board of trustees meeting held on March 29, 2016 the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) approved the placement of school principals and vice-principals for the 2016-2017 school year. The (CSCNO) proudly announces the following appointments.

Again this year, eight Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) schools will offer a free basic French language program until the end of the school year. The “À petits pas . . . . Small Steps program” programseeks to support parents/guardians who have enrolled a child in a full-time kindergarten program in a French Catholic school.

Sudbury’s Collège Notre-Dame (CND) recently launched its 28th annual fundraising campaign in support of the Northern Cancer Research Foundation. With some 200 students taking part in the February 29th annual door-to-door blitz across Greater Sudbury, the CND was able to raise $12,392. Including this most recent donation, total funds raised by Collège Notre-Dame during the last 28 years are close to $700,000.

On Monday, March 7, Darquise Frappier, a grade 6 student at École catholique Félix-Ricard (Sudbury), will be honoured for her outstanding achievements during a ceremony officiated by the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.  On that day, Darquise, along with 12 other Ontario youths, will be presented the Ontario Junior Citizens Award by the Ontario Community Newspapers Association.  These young people represent a diverse group sharing a common desire to make a difference. They are truly an inspiring group whose stories illustrate leadership, creativity, determination and generosity.
