A thousand Greater Sudbury students to take part in an educational pow-wow

Some 1,000 Greater Sudbury students will gather at the École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur field (261 Notre-Dame Avenue, Sudbury) on Friday, June 10, from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., to take part in a traditional pow-wow and various related events in celebration of National Aboriginal Day. This activity, offered by the N’Swamakok Native Friendship Centre, will unite elementary school students from the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario, Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l’Ontario, Sudbury Catholic District School Board and Rainbow District School Board. It will enable participants to better appreciate and discover the culture of Canada’s Aboriginal people. Members of the media are invited to attend.

Some 1,900 grade 6 to 8 students to take part in St-Jean Baptiste concert

On Thursday, June 9, at 10:30 a.m., approximately 1,900 grade 6, 7 and 8 francophone students from some 30 Greater Sudbury, Sudbury East, North Shore and other Northern Ontario schools will gather at Bell Park’s Grace Hartman Amphitheatre for the St-Jean Baptiste performance featuringthe francophone folk rock band Hey Wow. The concert will also benefit from the contribution of Sudbury’s Stef Paquette, and is presented through the collaborative effort of the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO), the Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l’Ontario (CSPGNO) and Laurentian University

On May 14, the Association franco-ontarienne des conseils scolaires catholiques (Franco-Ontarian Association of Catholic School Boards) (AFOCSC) honoured Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) school board trustee for District 4 (Greater Sudbury wards 1–4) Marcel Montpellier with the Catholic Education Award of Excellence (Prix d’excellence en éducation catholique) at its annual congress. This award recognizes Mr. Montpellier’s important contributions to French language Catholic education in Ontario.

A summer camp with great appeal to young basketball players

As in past years, young basketball enthusiasts from the Greater Sudbury will be able to fine-tune their sports skills during the upcoming Franco Basket Camp organized by the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO). Available to children ages 8 to 13 years, the camp will be held between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., from Monday, July 4, to Friday, July 8, at Collège Notre-Dame, located at 100 Lévis St, in Sudbury. The registration fee is $145 per child.

More than 600 francophone students from 99 French language Catholic and public secondary schools will gather in Pembroke from May 20 to 23 to take part in the 23nd edition of the Jeux franco-ontariens (Franco-Ontarian Games). Held at the Centre scolaire catholique Jeanne-Lajoie and École publique l’Équinoxe under the theme “Ensemble, direction avenir,” this annual provincial gathering attracts a great deal of attention among students from the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO).

Two Collège Notre-Dame students to compete in the 2016 Canada-Wide Science Fair

The high quality of their science projects has enabled two Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) students to qualify for the 2016 Canada-Wide Science Fair to be held in Montréal on May 14-21. These students are among some 25,000 emerging Canadian scientists from grades 7 through 12 to participate in more than 100 regional science fairs throughout the country, where they present their research and their accomplishments and compete to represent their region in the Canada-Wide Science Fair.

École Notre-Dame-du-Sault students to discover the richness of the Métis and First Nations cultures

From Monday, May 30 to Friday, June 3, students from Sault Ste. Marie’s École Notre-Dame-du-Sault will interact with a Native leader in a learning activity that will enable both students and teaching staff to benefit by discovering the bounty of Métis and First Cultures. During the week, they participate in the building of a birchbark canoe.
