School Boards work together to deliver education in Elliot Lake

The Ministry of Education is encouraging area school boards to work together to address student accommodation needs in Elliot Lake. As a result, the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) and the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) are collaborating to determine how to best deliver education in English and in French in this community.

CND artists showcase their talent in the Corrid’ART Art Galery

From Monday, December 16, to Thursday, December 19, about 100 artistic creations from grade 9 to 12 students will be on display at Sudbury’s Collège Notre-Dame (100 Lévis St.). The works of art from CND students will be on display from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. while the launch of the display will take place on Tuesday, December 17, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Students being showcased selected a creation among those completed since September while some students will put on display a work of art they created at the provincial VisionArt festival. Everyone is invited to attend this artistic exhibition promoting the talent of young Greater Sudbury artists.

Franco-Ouest students to gift-wrap Christmas presents to build a well in a developing country

Students from Espanola’s École secondaire catholique Franco-Ouest will offer a friendly Christmas gift-wrapping service at Giant Tiger (270 Center St., Espanola) on Tuesday, December 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. Donations received will go towards the students’ fundraising campaign in support of the international charity Free the Children. Community members are invited to have their presents wrapped in exchange for a donation that will go towards this fundraising initiative.

Sudbury - During its inaugural December 6, 2013 board meeting, Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) school trustees elected Mr. André Bidal as President for the 2013-2014 school year. Mr. Paul Demers will assume the vice-presidency for the same term.
Horizon students put on a “Christmas Is Back” concert

École secondaire catholique l’Horizon invites the public to its “Revoilà Noël ” (Christmas is Back) community concert to take place on Sunday, December 15, at 1:30 p.m. No less than 40 people will share their musical talents during this activity set to take place in the school located at 1650 Valleyview Road in Val Caron. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students and children and can be reserved by calling (705) 897-2503.
Notre-Dame-du-Sault tops the Algoma Regional First Lego League Competition

Students from Sault Ste. Marie’s École Notre-Dame-du-Sault displayed their ingenuity during the Algoma Regional First Lego League Competition held on November 30 at Sault College. With 12 teams competing, students from Notre-Dame-du-Sault rose to the challenge and finished first overall, earning the right to represent the District of Algoma at the provincial First Lego League Competition in Waterloo on January 11, 2014. The students from Notre-Dame-du-Sault also won the Algoma Regional First Lego League Competition in 2012 and competed at the provincial championship in 2011 and 2012.

CSCNO students to discover career opportunities in health care

On Tuesday, November 26, and Wednesday, November 27, grade 8 students from 12Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) elementary schools will take part in a Heath Career Fair. This activity, provided by the Consortium national de formation en santé (CNFS) – Volets Collège Boréal and Laurentian University and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOMS), will make students aware of the wide variety of career opportunities in the health sector and of the importance of offering health services in French.
The November 26 Health Career Fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 12-noon at École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur (261 Notre-Dame Avenue, Sudbury) while the November 27 fair will run from from 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. at École secondaire catholique l’Horizon (1650 Valleyview Road, Val Caron). Workhops will offer students valuable information on a variety of careers such as paramedic, pharmaceutical technician, medicine, nursing, and dental hygiene. Participants will also receive a health career information kit.
The intent of this activity is to help orient students in career and secondary school academic program selections. By hosting this event in two CSCNO secondary schools, the postsecondary partners are providing a strategic support to French-language catholic schools offering a Specialist High Skills Major in health and wellness.
École secondaire catholique Champlain (Chelmsford), École secondaire catholique Horizon (Val Caron) and École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur (Sudbury) are proud to offer the SHSM health and wellness program to students. The SHSM health and wellness program makes it possible for students to personalize their high school experience and accumulate transferable skills and competencies to facilitate their entry into the job market. The program provides a solid basis of sector-specific knowledge and contextualized health and wellness operations skills on which to build their training or apprenticeship experience or pursue their studies at the college or university level. Students are exposed to the realities of the work environment, thus ensuring that they are better prepared to make informed career decisions.
The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality learning environment and academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
