WHAT?                Official opening of multisensory room

 As part of Catholic Education Week activities, École St-Charles Borromée will celebrate the official opening of its new multisensory room. The Snoezelen room was created through the efforts of educators Denise Anderson and Francine Lagrandeur who wanted to create a room for special needs students and support them in their learning. Through its design, the room places the person with special needs in a soothing and stimulating environment, the "Snoezelen room". These rooms are specially designed to deliver stimuli to various senses.

The Association franco-ontarienne des conseils scolaires catholiques (AFOCSC) celebrated the 15th anniversary of its 8 school boards and more than 225 years of French Catholic education in Ontario, at its annual congress in London on May 3rd.  School board representatives, elected officials and dignitaries were in attendance to celebrate the many success stories and achievements of catholic schools since the inception of the boards in 1998.

As in past years, young basketball enthusiasts from the Greater Sudbury will be able to fine-tune their sports skills during the upcoming Franco Basket Camp organized by the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO). Available to children ages 8 to 13 years, the camp will be held between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., from Monday, July 8, to Friday, July 12, at École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur, located at 261 Notre-Dame, in Sudbury. The registration fee is $145 per child.

Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) President Marcel Montpellier and Director of Education Lyse-Anne Papineau are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Stéphane Charbonneau to the position of Assistant Director of Accountability and Efficiency. Stéphane brings a wealth of varied experience in teaching and school administration to the position, which he will assume in mid-August, 2013.

On Tuesday, April 23, Hanmer’s École Notre-Dame students and staff will celebrate their passion for reading as part of World Book Day activities. Several reading-based activities will take place for students from Junior Kindergarten to grade 8 and their parents. At 11:40 a.m., the school will celebrate the success of its « Get Hooked on Books » (Mordez dans les livres) program with a gathering. From 1 to 2:45 p.m., local author and story teller Rachel Desaulniers will offer a writing workshop to grade 5 to 8 students. Members of the media are cordially invited to take part in the activities at École Notre-Dame, located at 4503 Dennie St. in Hanmer.

Thanks to the high quality of their science projects, several Collège Notre-Dame (Sudbury) students stood out during the Sudbury Regional Science Fair held on the Laurentian University campus on April 13 and 14.

Abigail Thorpe and Josée Courtemanche, two grade 12 students at Collège Notre-Dame, distinguished themselves at the Science Fair through the quality of their project entitled “Sudbury’s Toxic Soils and their Effects on Garden Vegetables.” They are among the seven Greater Sudbury students to qualify for the 2013 Canada-Wide Science Fair to be held in Lethbridge (Alberta) on May 11-18. These students are among some 25,000 emerging Canadian scientists from grades 7 through 12 to participate in more than 100 regional science fairs throughout the country.
