Members of the media are cordially invited to attend the fourth Franco-Espo, a Francophone Catholic Pride rally in Espanola, on Friday, June 7. This event provides an opportunity for École Saint-Joseph and École secondaire catholique Franco-Ouest students from kindergarten to grade 12 to celebrate the vitality of their faith, language and culture. This year, students and staff from École Georges Vanier (Elliot Lake), École Sainte-Anne (Spanish) and École secondaire catholique Jeunesse-Nord (Blind River) will also be taking part in the activity, the only Francophone community activity in Espanola.

On Thursday, June 6, at 10:30 a.m., some 1,900 grade 6, 7 and 8 francophone students from some 20 Greater Sudbury, Sudbury East, North Shore and other Northern Ontario schools will gather at Bell Park’s Grace Hartman Amphitheatre for the St-Jean Baptiste performance featuring the Franco-Ontarian artist Damien Robitaille. The concert is presented jointly by Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO), Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l’Ontario (CSPGNO) and La Slague, with support from Laurentian University, the University of Sudbury, Collège Boréal, the Centre de santé communautaire du Grand Sudbury, and the Association canadienne-française de l’Ontario du grand Sudbury.

On Saturday, May 25, at 11 a.m., some 50 Chapleau residents will take part in the 3nd annual Run for the Fight against Cancer organized by École secondaire catholique Trillium. Participants in this event may choose to walk or run a distance of 2, 5 or 10 kilometres. The registration fee for this fundraising event is $25 for people 12 years of age and over and $15 for participants 12 and under. Organized by school students and staff, this activity is an annual fundraising event in the fight against cancer. Proceeds from the race will be presented to the local Relay for Life organizing committee.

Since the start of May, Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) elementary schools have been offering a warm welcome to children who are starting junior kindergarten in September 2013 as well as their parents/guardians. All families having registered their children in a French language Catholic school are invited to the “Bienvenue à la maternelle” (Welcome to Kindergarten) event. Parents who have not registered their children in a CSCNO school still have time to register for this event by calling their neighbourhood school.

Several Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario students displayed great skills during the recent Franco-Ontarian Chess Tournament that took place in Haileybury from May 2 to 4. Among the 400 students measuring their skills in this discipline that requires much strategizing and memory and problem-solving abilities were young chess masters from École Saint-Joseph (Wawa), École St-Denis (Sudbury) and Collège Notre-Dame (Sudbury) who won tournament medals and qualified for the national chess championship.

As part of Catholic Education Week activities, several members of the St-Charles community gathered at École St-Charles Borromée on May 8 to celebrate the opening of the school’s new multisensory Snoezelen room. The room was created through the efforts of educators Denise Anderson and Francine Lagrandeur, who wanted to create this type of space that could benefit special needs students and support them in their learning.
