Zaccharie Lefrançois, a former student at École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur (Sudbury) who is now pursuing his studies at Collège Boréal, stood among the eight outstanding citizens celebrated on February 20th during the Northern Ontario Community Builders Awards of Excellence gala. Zaccharie was presented the Young Leader Award in recognition of his important contributions and the 1,200 volunteer hours he accumulated while still in high school.

Collège Notre-Dame and É.s.c. Thériault to square off in Francophone Reach for the Top competition

On Friday, February 28, eight teams representing Sudbury’s Collège Notre-Dame and École secondaire catholique Thériault from Timmins will square off in the Tournoi du gros cinq sous (Big Nickel Tournament). This contest measuring students’ knowledge will take place in the Collège Notre-Dame cafeteria (100 Lévis St., Sudbury). Very similar to the former Reach for the Top contest, the Tournoi du gros cinq sous is the first French-language competition of this type to take place in Sudbury in many years. Members of the media are invited to view the competition.

High school musicians from the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) had the experience of a lifetime at the 11th annual “Quand ça nous chante” music festival. Some 385 up-and-coming musicians from 41 Ontario francophone secondary schools took part in this gathering which took place from February 20 to 23 in Sudbury.

Collège Notre-Dame students reach $675,000 in donations to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation

Sudbury’s Collège Notre-Dame (CND) recently launched its 26th annual fundraising campaign in support of the Northern Cancer Research Foundation. With more than 400 students taking part in the February 22 annual door-to-door blitz across Greater Sudbury, the CND was able to raise $26,000. Including this most recent donation, total funds raised by Collège Notre-Dame during the last 26 years has reached $675,000.

Olympic theme activity at École Alliance St-Joseph
Media representatives are cordially invited to attend an Olympic themed day of activities offered to students at Chelmsford’s École Alliance St-Joseph. During this activity, students will take part in Wii games, play bingo (with Olympic symbols) and take part in dance activities. Students will also make bracelets that will include the colours of the five Olympic rings. This activity is part of a fund-raising initiative lead by the school this year in support of Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer (NOFCC)

Wawa’s École Saint-Joseph Chevaliers claims a second volleyball championship

The month of February has been a very special one for Wawa’s École Saint-Joseph Chevaliers senior girls’ volleyball team. After competing in the Franco-Ontarian Volleyball Championship in Whitby where they finished in the top eight, the Chevaliers returned to Wawa on February 11. The following day, the girls from É.s.c. Saint-Joseph resumed activities to face the Manitouwadge Secondary School Wolverines in Manitouwadge in a tie-breaker to determine who would advance to the North Shore Secondary School Athletic Association (NSSSAA) finals. The Chevaliers upset their rivals in three very exciting sets.
