On Thursday, June 5, at 10:30 a.m., some 1,800 grade 6, 7 and 8 francophone students from some 30 Greater Sudbury, Sudbury East, North Shore, Algoma and other Northern Ontario schools will gather at Bell Park’s Grace Hartman Amphitheatre for the St-Jean Baptiste performance featuringthe Franco-Ontarian artist Stef Paquette.

Later this week, cyclists taking part in The Great Canadian Ride (La Grande Traversée) will stop at two Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) schools during their trek across Northern Ontario. This group of Francophone cyclists will be provided a warm welcome by students and staff from École Notre-Dame-du-Sault (Sault Ste. Marie), École Saint-Joseph (Blind River) and École secondaire catholique Jeunesse-Nord (Blind River) on May 29, 30 and 31.

SUDBURY – The University of Sudbury and Sudbury’s École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur will proceed with the planting of 100 trees, generously donated by Collège Boréal, on Tuesday, May 27, at 10 a.m.on the grounds of École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur (261, Notre Dame Avenue, Sudbury).

Sierra Howald, a grade 12 student at Sudbury’s École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur, was awarded the Ontario Medal for Young Volunteers during a Ceremony held on May 14 in the Ontario Lieutenant-Governor’s Suite. The Honorable David C. Onley was on hand to present the award to seven exceptional youths selected from over 300 candidates. Sierra received this prestigious award in recognition of her community involvement that has an impact on many of her fellow citizens.

In the coming weeks, Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) French Catholic elementary schools will be offering a warm welcome to children who are starting junior kindergarten in September 2014 as well as their parents/guardians. All families having registered their children in a French language Catholic school are invited to the “Bienvenue à la maternelle” (Welcome to Kindergarten) event. Parents who have not registered their children in a CSCNO school still have time to register for this event by calling their neighbourhood school.

Students from Sudbury’s Collège Notre-Dame displayed great skill during the recent Franco-Ontarian Chess Tournament in Haileybury from May 8 to 10. This activity enabled the 235 student players to measure their skills in a discipline that requires much strategizing, memory and problem-solving abilities.

Some 300 grade 7 and 8 students from several Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) schools will gather at Sudbury’s École St-Denis (1200 Ramsey View Court) on Thursday, May 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., to participate in the We Day rally. Members of the media are invited to attend.
