Between November 22 and December 2, students at five Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) elementary schools are participating in a cultural project aimed at bolstering their pride for their country. As part of this project, the students will strengthen their understanding of the country’s national anthem and take part in the in recording a new version of “O Canada” that will subsequently be broadcast on their school’s student radio.

Through the support from the Ontario Arts Council, students at École St-Joseph (Sudbury), École St-Pierre (Sudbury), École St-Joseph (Hanmer), École St-Augustin (Garson) and École Notre-Dame (Hanmer) schools were able to work for a day or two on this project with Franco-Ontarian recording artist Jean-Guy “Chuck” Labelle. After studying our national anthem’s lyrics and music, the students will become creative and learn to integrate rhythm, cadence and style to their musical creation. With the support of Chuck Labelle and based on their individual skills, students discovered how to add rap, rhythm and harmony to the melody.

Some students preferred to audition with Chuck Labelle as solo artists, while others chose to sing as part of a duet or trio. Through the use of a portable recording studio, it was possible to record students and produce a version of “O Canada” at each school. All five versions of our national anthem will be broadcast on student radio stations, providing students with the pleasure of listening to the various versions produced at each school. The creations are expected to air in January 2017.

The CSCNO wishes to thank the Ontario Arts Council for its support and acknowledges the valuable contributions from staff at the five participating schools.

The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
