Emily Brock, a grade 10 student at Sudbury’s École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur, was awarded the Governor General’s Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers during a ceremony held in Ottawa on November 8, 2016. This national award for volunteers, presented by Canada’s Governor General, the Right Honourable David Johnson, recognizes ten exceptional young Canadians for their outstanding contributions and commitment.

Emily Brock shares her outstanding leadership skills in her school’s Student Parliament, pastoral committee and sports teams. While participating in a host of school and cultural activities, Emily also leads a humanitarian effort in her school and in the Holy Redeemer Parish that enables the production of mattresses for orphans in Haiti. She played a key role in support of the “Zawadi la Tumaini” (Gifts of Hope) Orphanage in Nairobi (Kenya), by organizing several fund-raising activities

When she was a student at École St-Pierre (Sudbury), Emily was involved in humanitarian projects. The donation of her long hair enabled the fabrication of wigs for children who had lost their hair through sickness. She also was involved in the creation of a knitting club that produced wool scarves for Sudbury’s Association des jeunes de la rue (Youth Homeless Association).

“Emily has a natural leadership capacity and desire to help others. Her generosity though is not limited to people as she also has a great deal of affection for animals,” explains Mr. Paul Henry, École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur Principal. “Very mature for her age, Emily is able to prioritize her physical health and emotional well-being, and encourages other to do so as well.”

“Emily actively shares actively her leadership abilities in her school, her community and her parish. She also strives to enhance people’s lives through her many contributions”, stated Mrs. Lyse-Anne Papineau, Director of Education at the CSCNO. “Appreciated for her capacity to lead humanitarian projects, she succeeds in motivating others to make good choices and to do their part in making the world a better place.”
