On September 29, 2016, Markus Valtonen, a grade 11 student at Sudbury’s École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur, was honoured with the Huntington University Leadership Award. This distinction, presented during a gala luncheon, recognizes this student’s noteworthy community contributions and leadership.
This 16-year-old student is a young developing community leader who actively volunteers and excels as a leader in the cadet corps. Captain of his unit’s biathlon team, he also holds the title of Company Sergeant Major in Sudbury’s 2912 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps. His current honour follows a number of other recent distinctions, such as the Top Cadet Award, which he earned this summer at the conclusion of a six-week Leadership and Challenge Course at the Banff National Army Cadet Summer Training Centre.
Markus Valtonen is also an outstanding student. This year, he is the grade 11 student delegate to the School Parliament and represents the Griffons as a member of his secondary school’s badminton and volleyball teams, while maintaining an academic average of above 80%.
