June 22, 2015
On Wednesday, June 24, students and staff from several Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) schools will celebrate Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day. Both École catholique Georges Vanier (Elliot Lake) and École St-Étienne (Dowling) will play an important role in the day’s identity-building activities to promote their Catholic and Francophone heritage and culture.
This year, École catholique Georges Vanier (140 Hillside Drive North, Elliot Lake) is participating in the celebration of both Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day and the 60th anniversary of the City of Elliot Lake. A Franco-Ontarian flag-raising ceremony, scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 24, at 10 a.m., will attract the participation of various dignitaries including Mr. Dan Marchisella, Elliot Lake Mayor; Mr. Luc Cyr, city councillor; and Mr. Paul Gervais, CSCNO school trustee for the North-Shore. Afterwards, a magic show (La magie qui inspire) featuring Nicole Patrick will be offered to the francophone community by École catholique Georges Vanier and École secondaire Villa-française-des-jeunes. On hand for the show, presented at École catholique Georges Vanier, will be an expected audience of some 250 students from École catholique Georges Vanier, École Villa-française-des-jeunes, École Sainte-Anne (Spanish), and Our Lady of Lourdes French Immersion School. Everyone will also enjoy tasting the delicious Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day cake graciously provided by the Elliott Lake Knights of Columbus.
Meanwhile, students and staff from École St-Étienne (79 Houle, Dowling) will participate on Wednesday, June 24, at 10 a.m., in the Franco-Ontarian flag-raising ceremony at the Dowling Leisure Centre (79 Main Street West). Dressed in green and white and brandishing with pride their school banner and Franco-Ontarian flags, the students will march from their school to the Leisure Centre. Upon arrival, they will add colour to the flag-raising ceremony, which is held as part of Greater Sudbury’s Saint-Jean Celebration activities, by singing Mon Beau Drapeau and Notre Place. The Franco-Ontarian flag will henceforth proudly fly at the Dowling Leisure Centre.
The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality learning environment and academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
