Some 1,000 Greater Sudbury students will gather at the École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur field (261 Notre-Dame Avenue, Sudbury) on Friday, June 19, from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., to take part in a traditional pow-wow and various related events in celebration of National Aboriginal Day. This activity, offered by the N’Swamakok Native Friendship Centre, will unite elementary school students from the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario, Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l’Ontario, Sudbury Catholic District School Board and Rainbow District School Board. It will enable participants to better appreciate and discover the culture of Canada’s Aboriginal people. Members of the media are invited to attend.

After viewing the Grand Entry, students will see dancers in regalia, listen to honour songs and discover the various components of a pow-wow. The following workshops will also be held: drumming, dancing, playing Métis spoons, birch canoe building with École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur students, tipi teachings and trapping.

This traditional pow-wow is provided to students as part of National Aboriginal Day. Celebrated annually on June 21, National Aboriginal Day is an occasion for all Canadians to celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada.

The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality learning environment and academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
