December 4, 2014
On December 2, the team from Blind River’s École secondaire catholique Jeunesse-Nord claimed the silver medal at the regional Cardboard Boat Races competition for secondary schools that was held in the Sturgeon Falls Recreation Complex.
The event, put on by Skills Canada Ontario, requires each four-student team to design and build a boat with very limited material: two sheets of cardboard measuring 4 feet by 8 feet, a roll of adhesive tape and a caulking compound. No less than 13 teams representing various schools from Northern Ontario took part in the competition. Students were judged on the design and construction quality of their boats, teamwork, organization, security and cleanliness, creativity, team spirit and the speed and resistance of their vessels.
É.s.c. Jeunesse-Nord distinguished itself at this competition by finishing second and claiming the silver medal. The team stood out among competitors through its capacity to build a quick and sturdy cardboard boat. Not only did the vessel navigate a distance of 25 meters in 23 seconds, it was able to carry a load of 380 pounds, the heaviest load of the competition. The silver-winning team from Jeunesse-Nord includes Dyllan Williston, Brook Gravel, Kate Mitchell and Jeffrey Pinkse. They are coached by Mr. Hassan Azzi.
As a result of their strong showing, the Jeunesse-Nord teams will travel to Waterloo on March 5, 2015 to participate in the Cardboard Boat Races Provincial Championship.
The following CSCNO secondary schools took part in the Cardboard Boat Races regional competition: É.s.c. Jeunesse-Nord (Blind River), École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur (Sudbury) and Collège Notre-Dame (Sudbury).
