On Wednesday, November 12, a camera crew from the Ontario Ministry of Education will be at Sudbury’s Collège Notre-Dame to record a learning activity in Mrs. Manon Gauthier’s French class. The Ministry is interested in a scheduled activity that will enable students to benefit from the SpeakUp in a Box learning tool. During the visit to Collège Notre-Dame, the Ministry of Education will become familiar with the successful teaching practice with the intention of sharing it with other secondary schools and school boards across the province.

By incorporating SpeakUp in a Box into classroom teaching, Mrs. Gauthier and other teachers at Collège Notre-Dame have demonstrated the importance of enabling students to speak up and have a voice in their learning. The objective is connecting what's happening in the classroom to real-life experiences outside school and giving students ways to help achieve their goals. SpeakUp in a Box is a way for students to shape their learning environment while building their skills and abilities. It also seeks to help students to be more active citizens by supporting student democracy and empowerment.

While at Collège Notre-Dame, the Ministry of Education will film students as they use SpeakUp in a Box to further their knowledge of democracy and citizenship. The crew will then interview Collège Notre-Dame Principal Johanne Chrétien and teacher Manon Gauthier, who will offer insights on how SpeakUp in a Box is a powerful teaching tool that can be adapted to a school’s particular needs and learning enhancement strategies.

The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
