September 23, 2014

On Thursday, September 25, at 1 p.m., some 300 students and staff from the North Shore’s French Catholic Schools (École Sainte-Anne in Spanish and École Saint-Joseph and École secondaire catholique Jeunesse-Nord in Blind River) will take part in an historic flag-raising ceremony at the Blind River District Health Centre, located at 525 Causley Street. Once raised, the Franco-Ontarian flag will be permanently flown in front of this health institution, which serves the North Shore communities and has partial French language designation. Members of the media are invited to attend.

The flag-raising activity, held on Franco-Ontarian Day, will attract the participation of students as well as community members and Blind River District Health Centre staff. The provincial Franco-Ontarian Day, celebrated officially this year for the fifth time, will take place on September 25, a date that coincides with the anniversary of the Franco-Ontarian flag, which was flown for the first time in Sudbury in 1975.

Students and staff from the North Shore’s French Catholic Schools take great pride in celebrating the green-and-white Franco-Ontarian flag. The left band of the flag has a solid light green background with a white fleur-de-lis in the middle, while the right band has a solid white background with a stylized green trillium in the middle. The green represents the summer months, while the white represents the winter months. The trillium is the floral symbol of Ontario, while the fleur-de-lis represents the French-Canadian heritage of the Franco-Ontarian community.

The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality learning environment and academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
