Henri-Philippe Marceau, a grade 12 student at Collège Notre-Dame in Sudbury, was recently accepted into an international summer program for young physicists in Waterloo. Only 38 secondary school students, including 19 Canadians, were selected for the International Summer School for Young Physicists that will take place from July 13 to the 26 at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo.
The International Summer School for Young Physicists is an exciting and challenging two-week program for Canadian and international high school students with a keen interest in theoretical physics and who intend to pursue physics studies at the university level. This program will greatly motivate young aspiring “Einsteins” who will benefit from presentations by Perimeter Institute researchers on cutting edge theoretical physics and will be able to exchange on topics such as superstring theory, quantum computing and dark matter.
Henri-Philippe Marceau will also have the opportunity to work with leading international theoretical physicists. This experience, that will include hands-on labs, will deepen his insights into modern physics, Einstein's ideas and the quantum nature of our universe. This CND student will also become aware of his potential as a potential future researcher in theoretical physics.
This Collège Notre-Dame graduating student qualified for this program on the basis of his passion and skills in physics and mathematics as well as his involvement in extracurricular activities. While excelling in hockey, soccer, volley-ball and badminton, Henri-Philippe also contributed to his French Catholic school community by participating in the cancer Blitz and leadership camps. In addition to his involvement in activities at his school and parish and serving as an assistant hockey coach, Henri-Philippe also worked as a soccer and hockey referee.
«Henri-Philippe is an outstanding student who excels in mathematics and sciences as well as in sports, which reflects the quality of the teaching and support offered by Collège Notre-Dame teachers. While Henri-Philippe will complete his high school studies very soon, we foresee that his success will motivate younger students to contribute to their community, continue to pursue their own efforts to reach their full potential and excel in their studies,” stated Collège Notre-Dame principal, Mrs. Johanne Chrétien
