Mélanie-Rose Frappier, a grade 11 student at École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur in Sudbury, was honoured during the Gathering Our Voices 2014 Aboriginal Youth Conference. Held in Vancouver from March 18 to 21, this conference brought together some 2,000 youths (14 to 24 years of age) as well as presenters and guests. The goal of the event was to promote the knowledge sharing and networking and to support the young leaders in learning new skills. During the conference, Mélanie-Rose Frappier was awarded the Aboriginal Youth Award in recognition of her outstanding commitment and achievement in her community.

Mélanie-Rose is an active community leader, striving to make a difference in people’s lives through her contributions. Bright and articulate, she takes great pride in her Francophone, Catholic, and Métis heritage. During the 2013-14 academic year, Mélanie-Rose was an active participant in the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario’s (CSCNO) Aboriginal Education Program and supported efforts aimed at empowering Aboriginal youth and providing them with the knowledge to make positive changes in their world.

An active participant in various Aboriginal events such as Louis Riel Day, Earth Day and National Aboriginal Day, she also played an important leadership role as Northern Ontario’s representative in the Youth Ambassador of Canada program, which included a three-week student exchange in the United States.

“Mélanie-Rose takes great pride in her Francophone, Catholic, and Métis heritage, and her leadership skills are greatly appreciated in our schools,” stated Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) Director of Education Mrs. Lyse-Anne Papineau. “An honour student at École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur, she has become a strong role model for our students, actively promoting her cultures in our schools and promoting them in the wider community.”

The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
