The Chevaliers from Wawa’s École secondaire Saint-Joseph continued their dominance on March 19 and 20 by winning the North Shore Secondary School Athletic Association’s (NSSSAA) girls’ regional junior and senior volleyball championships. With these championship titles, École secondaire Saint-Joseph now has five sports banners hanging in the school.

During the playoffs, which drew the area’s best teams, Saint-Joseph’s junior and senior squads maintained a perfect record of four wins and no losses. The Chevaliers senior team eliminated the Michipicoten High School Vikings in the semi-final match before convincingly defeating the Manitouwadge High School Wolverines in the championship encounter by a score of 25-7 and 25-12.

The Chevaliers juniors edged the Hornepayne Hawks in the semi-final match, while in the championship final they edged the Manitouwadge High School Wolverines 25-20 and 25-17.

“Our players displayed an unwavering dedication to the team during practices,” stated Mrs. Carole Bouffard, coach of the Chevaliers senior team. “We were not only impressed with the victory, but by our players’ calm and confidence during the games as well as their utmost respect for the sport and other competing teams.”

“Disciplined practices, their team spirit and great determination are key elements in our success. What a beautiful team,” added Mrs. Janie-Céleste Bédard, coach of the Chevaliers juniors.

Claiming a fourth and fifth banner in an 18-month span is quite an accomplishment for École secondaire Saint-Joseph. The school takes great pride in its athletic success and in excelling among schools located on the North Shore of Lake Superior.
