Thanks to the excellence of their science projects, several students from Collège Notre-Dame (Sudbury) stood out during the Sudbury Regional Science Fair held on online in April. Collège Notre-Dame student Maxine Maillet and Jasmine Lauzon distinguished themselves at the Science Fair through the quality of their science projects. These Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon student are among the Greater Sudbury students to qualify for the 2022 Canada-Wide Science Fair to be held virtually on May 16-20.

Maxine Maillet, grade 11 student at Collège Notre-Dame, distinguished herself for the quality of her science project entitled “L’effet du niveau de pH sur les cellules de joue” (The effect of pH levels on the cells of the cheek). This student placed 1st in Life Sciences for the Senior Division. Maxine was also the winner of the Biotechnology Award, the Laurentian University Dean’s Award and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s Young Innovator Award.

Jasmine Lauzon, grade 11 student at Collège Notre-Dame, was honoured for her project entitled “Analyser la fabrication, les effets et le développement des dépendances sur les électroniques” (Anlyzing the Fabrication, Effects and Development of Dependencies on Electronics). This student placed 2nd in Life Sciences for the Senior Division and was also awarded the University of Ottawa Admission Scholarship.

Chloé O’Connor, grade 10 student at Collège Notre-Dame, distinguished herself for the quality of her science project entitled “Quel est le meilleur type d’eau pour les plantes?” (What is the Best Type of Water for Plants?). This student placed 3rd in Life Sciences for the Intermediate Division and was awarded the Laurentian University Biology Award.

Alexie Shamess and Samantha Shewchuk, grade 10 students at Collège Notre-Dame, were honoured for their project entitled “L’ail et la bactérie” (Garlic and the Bacteria). These students earned an Honourable Mention in Life Sciences for the Intermediate Division.

Camille Benoit, grade 11 student at Collège Notre-Dame, placed 3rd in Life Sciences for the Senior Division in light of the quality of her project entitled “Les adolescents et la gamme de suggestibilité” (Teenagers and the Range of suggestibility). 

Néomi Venne and Justine Toner, grade 10 students at Collège Notre-Dame, stood out for the quality of their project entitled “Les bactéries affectées par le savon” (Bacterias Affected by Soap). These students earned an Honourable Mention in Life Sciences for the Intermediate Division. They were also presented the Laurentian University Chemistry/ Biochemistry Award as well as the Science Writing Award.

Brady Rhéaume, grade 10 students at Collège Notre-Dame, distinguished himself for the quality of his science project entitled “Quelle boisson est le plus efficace pour enlever la rouille d’un clou?“ (Which Drink is Most Effective at Removing Rust from a Nail?). He placed 3rd in Physical Sciences in the Intermediate Division. Brady was also presented the Chemical Institute of Canada Award and the Jack and Maija Ceming Award.

“The outstanding achievements of our secondary level students reflect the quality of the educational program provided to our students as well as the high level of excellence of our teachers in the fields of science and technology,” stated Mr. Paul Henry, CSC Nouvelon Director of Education and Secretary Treasurer. “Our students have a truly well-earned reputation for academic excellence and we take great pride in seeing them reach new heights during this high-level science competition.”

The Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon offers a French-language Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSC Nouvelon provides a quality learning environment and academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 6,100 students enrolled in 27 elementary, 1 virtual school and 10 secondary schools.
