On Friday, February 22, 13 teams of grade 9 to 12 students from six French-language schools will gather at École secondaire catholique Champlain (61 Brookside Drive, Chelmsford) to square off in the Tournoi du Gros Cinq Sous (Big Nickel Tournament), a knowledge-based questions-and-answer competition inspired by the former Reach for the Top competition broadcast by CBC. Members of the media are invited to view the competition.
Like the Reach for the Top competition, the students, in teams of four, will attempt to correctly answer questions on topics ranging from the classics to popular culture, from history to mathematics. Beyond quick thinking, the students will need quick reflexes required by the game's buzzer system. Tournament organizers have prepared some 10,000 questions on various topics to measure the knowledge of the teams from Collège Notre-Dame (Sudbury), École secondaire catholique Champlain (Chelmsford), École secondaire catholique l’Horizon (Val Caron), École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur (Sudbury), École secondaire catholique Jeunesse-Nord (Blind River) and École secondaire catholique Thériault (Timmins).
The first round will take place in several different classrooms between 9 a.m. and 12-noon. Two teams from each division (junior and senior) will move on to the finals which will take place from 12:15 to 2:10 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium.
