The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) will host an evening featuring Aboriginal culture at École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur (261 Notre-Dame Ave., Sudbury) on Thursday, October 15, starting at 7 p.m. The purpose of this CSCNO event is to inform parents about the activities and services offered to First Nation, Métis and Inuit students.
The event will provide an opportunity to make parents aware of the importance of self-identification by Native students and inform them about available services and current teaching practices. The evening will also include a presentation by the Cercle métissé and testimonials from Native students.
The Cercle métissé, a group of Francophone Native artists from Ontario, will offer an interactive presentation that incorporates story-telling and traditional Native music. The Cercle metissé benefits from the cultural and artistic contributions of its four members: Daniel Richer, international crier; Christian Pilon, voyageur and birch-bark canoe builder; Michel Paiement, singer and songwirter; and Mélanie Smits, artist and Aboriginal Education Consultant at the CSCNO. The Cercle will undertake in November its first European tour with presentations scheduled in France.
The CSCNO, whose Aboriginal Education program is amongst the most proactive in Ontario, is providing this opportunity to support Native students (First Nation, Métis and Inuit) and help them reach their full potential. The Board’s program includes initiatives that support awareness, learning and success at school, and seeks to instill pride and belonging towards the Aboriginal cultures.
The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
