February 23, 2017

On Friday, February 24, 12 teams representing Collège Notre-Dame (Sudbury), École secondaire catholique Champlain (Chelmsford), École secondaire catholique l’Horizon (Val Caron), École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur (Sudbury) and École secondaire catholique Thériault (Timmins) will square off in the Tournoi du Gros Cinq Sous (Big Nickel Tournament).  This contest measuring students’ knowledge will take place in the École secondaire catholique Champlain gymnasium (61 Brookside Drive, Chelmsford). Similar to the former Reach for the Top competition, the Tournoi du Gros Cinq Sous is the only French-language competition of this type to take place in Sudbury. Members of the media are invited to view the competition.

In the Tournoi du Gros Cinq Sous, Collège Notre-Dame, ÉSC Champlain, ÉSC l’Horizon, ÉS du Sacré-Coeur and ÉSC Thériault grade 9 to 12 students will compete against each other in a question-and-answer game. The teams of four will attempt to answer questions as a team or individually on topics ranging from the classics to popular culture, from history to mathematics. Beyond quick thinking, the students will also rely on quick reflexes required by the game's buzzer system. Tournament organizers have prepared some 10,000 questions on various topics to measure the young competitors’ knowledge.

The first round will take place from 9 a.m. to 12-noon. Four teams will then advance to the next round, with the 3rd and 4th place teams will meet in the B Final at 12:30 p.m. and the two teams with the most points facing off in the A final at 1 p.m.
