Darquise Frappier, a grade 9 student at École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur (Sudbury), was recently presented the Diana Award. Established in memory of Lady Diana, Princess of Wales, this award is one of the most prestigious accolades a young person aged 9-25 can receive for his or her social action or humanitarian work. Princess Diana believed that young people have the power to change the world for the better. This award seeks to recognize young people all over the world who contribute to the well being of others through fundraising, volunteering or campaigning against bullying.

Darquise’s commitment to volunteerism and to various fundraising initiatives are what earned her this prestigious award. In an effort to share her passion for serving her community and encourage others to do the same, this Sacré-Coeur student who previously attended École catholique Félix-Ricard (Sudbury) founded the “Helping is Caring” program at the age of ten.

Through musical performances, Darquise was able to raise substantial funds for a variety of charitable organizations. On several occasions, she also approached local businesses to obtain donations to be included in care packages for an orphanage in Jamaica. Darquise also believes every child should be able to play sports and has been able to collect some 250 soccer balls to donate to the Centre de santé communautaire du Grand Sudbury and an orphanage in Jamaica. Over the last five years, the dollar value of Darquise’s contributions exceed $45,000.

“Our students are acclaimed for their volunteer contributions and community engagement,” stated Ms. Lyse-Anne Papineau, Director of Education at the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO). “The remarkable contributions made by Darquise make her a true role model for other students. We take pride in her dedication and are pleased to learn that her efforts have been recognized.”

The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality learning environment and academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students enrolled in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
