Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) secondary schools stood tall at the Regional Cardboard Boat Race competitions which took place in Espanola, Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay on November 27 and 28 with three teams taking home medals. Some 40 Northern Ontario teams from various communities took part in the challenge.
At the regional competition in Espanola on November 28, École secondaire catholique Champlain (Chelmsford) brought home a first place, while second place was claimed by École secondaire catholique l’Horizon (Val Caron). ÉSC Champlain’s team of Matthew Gordon, Jordan Hurley, Max Bélanger and Alexandre Bradley was a standout due to the speed and sturdiness of their boat, which travelled 25 metres in 23.27 seconds and had the capacity to carry a 163-kilogram load. The boat, constructed by ÉSC l’Horizon’s team comprised of Brooke Croke, Charlotte Buck, Hannah Simard and Josée Trottier, completed the 25-metre course in 28.28 seconds and carried a load of 281 kilograms.
Wawa’s École secondaire Saint-Joseph team made up of Spencer Terris, Nicolas Lafrenière, Raelyn Scott and Wesley Stewart claimed the bronze medal at the November 28th North-Western Competition in Thunder Bay based on their ability to build a quick and sturdy cardboard boat. Their vessel navigated 25 metres in 21.53 seconds and carried a load of 247 kilograms.
The winning teams from École secondaire catholique Champlain, École secondaire catholique l’Horizon and École secondaire Saint-Joseph will travel to Waterloo in March to take part in the Provincial Cardboard Boat Races.
Collège Notre-Dame (Sudbury) and École secondaire Notre-Dame-du-Sault (Sault Ste. Marie) also took part in the Regional Cardboard Boat Races.
The competition for students from grades 7 to 12 is hosted by Skills Canada and requires each participating team to design and build a cardboard boat. Students are evaluated on the design and construction quality of their boats, as well as on teamwork, organization, security, creativity, team spirit and the speed and resistance of their vessels. In addition to seeing how well their cardboard boats performed in water over a distance of 25 metres, the teams took part in a load challenge to determine how long their boats could carry a maximum number of teammates without sinking.
