On November 15, the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) held a public information session to provide an update on the proposed construction of a sports dome on the grounds of École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur. During the public meeting, the CSCNO was pleased at the considerable support voiced by numerous students, parents and community members. Attendees were able to see sketches of the dome produced by the firm of architects in charge of this project, Yallowega Bélanger Salach. They also learned about the process that led to a partnership agreement between the CSCNO and the Sudbury District Sports Club, and how the dome will be funded and managed, as well as its many benefits.

The sports dome will have two artificial turf fields and operate all-year-round. The dome’s construction will be funded by a private investor, while dome operations will be managed by the Sudbury District Sports Club. The CSCNO will invest $300,000 to add outside washrooms and parking spots. A construction permit application was recently submitted to the City of Greater Sudbury. Construction work on the dome is planned to start in the spring of 2019.

The sports dome will encourage a healthy lifestyle for all residents of Greater Sudbury and not just students. Many groups have already expressed an interest in using the dome for sports such as soccer, softball, dodgeball, wheelchair basketball and indoor hockey, to name but a few, as well as for activities such as fitness classes for elders.

“By encouraging physical activity 12 months a year, the new sports dome will be a major asset for our students as well as for the residents of the Moulin-à-fleur and Donovan neighbourhoods and, in fact, for the entire Greater Sudbury community,” stated CSCNO president Mr. André Bidal. “We are very pleased to be able to contribute to the realization of this highly anticipated project.”

The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality learning environment and academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students enrolled in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
