September 20, 2018

Earlier this week, the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) released the 2017-2018 provincial testing results for Ontario’s grades 3, 6, 9 and 10 students. The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) notes that its students continue to perform at a high level, especially in mathematics.

Since 2012-2013, reading results of CSCNO grade 3 students rose to 84% (an 11% increase), displaying significant improvement in that subject area. Writing results now stand at 79% (a 1% increase), while mathematics results increased to 77% (a 3% increase). The CSCNO is proud to note that the results of its grade 3 students in writing and mathematics are above the provincial average for French-language school boards, while results in reading match the average.

Grade 6 students really stood out in this year’s mathematics results, reaching 81% (a 5% increase). Reading results also increased to 89% (a 2% increase) while writing results dropped to 69% (a 12% decrease). The CSCNO is in the process of analyzing the factors that may have contributed to this decrease in order to improve next year’s results and align them with the excellent results obtained in the other subject areas.

The success rate of grade 9 students in the academic mathematics program increased to 79% (a 16% increase). In the applied mathematics program, 45% of students (a 3% increase) reached level 3 or 4. It is worth noting that these are the best results achieved by CSCNO students since provincial testing began, reflecting both the high quality of the educational program in CSCNO schools and the excellence of its teachers.

Grade 10 student results were 87% (a 3% increase) in the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). Achieving this result in a linguistic minority setting is quite an accomplishment, and the CSCNO takes pride in standing out among French-language school boards in Northern Ontario.

“As reflected in the yearly numbers, our students continue to perform remarkably well at all levels of provincial testing. Without a doubt, they greatly benefit from our teaching strategies, ongoing support and pedagogical initiatives,” explained Ms. Nicole Sonier, Executive Director of Learning at the CSCNO. “We are very proud to have achieved our best results so far in grade 9 mathematics. We are also conscious of the decrease in grade 6 writing results and will learn from them to develop improved strategies that will help ensure student success in this area.”

“The commitment of our school staff enables us to offer standout learning programs of high quality,” stated Ms. Lyse-Anne Papineau, CSCNO Director of Education. “Motivated by the desire to remain a top-performing school board, we will continue to perfect our teaching strategies in order to increase our students’ success rate and offer our families the quality French-language Catholic education that they have come to expect for their children. Our objective, as always, is to assist our students in reaching or exceeding provincial standards as they move forward to take their place in society.”

The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality learning environment and academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students enrolled in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
