Vanessa Morris, a grade 10 student at École secondaire catholique Champlain (Chelmsford), was presented the Leading Girls Building Communities Recognition Award last week. Ms. France Gélinas, Nickel Belt MPP, made her way to ESC Champlain on Friday, April 13, to present this coveted Award to Vanessa.

The Leading Girls, Building Communities Recognition Award acknowledges and celebrates women and girls who demonstrate exceptional leadership in working to improve the lives of others in their communities through volunteer work. Vanessa currently represents grade 10 students in the ÉSC Champlain’s student parliament, she is also Youth Advisor on the first ever North East Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) Patient and Family Advisory Committee as well as is one of the student representatives at the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario’s (CSCNO) sectorial tables. She was selected to participate in SHAD’s 2018 summer enrichment program and was selected as a member of the Ontario Ministry of Education Minister’s Student Advisory Council for 2018-2019, to name but a few of her accomplishments.

“I had the pleasure of meeting Vanessa when she was in grade 8 and served as a Page in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario for three weeks,” explains Ms. Gélinas. “She is an impressive young woman who’s always eager to get involved and help others. I believe she truly deserves the Leading Girls Building, Communities Recognition Award.”

“Our students are widely recognized for their leadership qualities and involvement in community affairs,” stated CSCNO Director of Education Ms. Lyse-Anne Papineau. “Vanessa is a remarkable young woman. Her contributions to improving the school environment at Champlain and her community are many. We are truly proud of her accomplishment and are thrilled that she is being recognized for her efforts.”   

The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality learning environment and academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students enrolled in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
