After several weeks of training, grades 7 and 8 students from École Notre-Dame (Hanmer) have earned a yellow belt in the Kuk Sool – Hapkido martial arts style. On Saturday, December 9, the students will demonstrate what they have learned and receive their belts.

Members of the media are invited to attend the demonstration, which will start at 9:30 a.m. in the École Notre-Dame gymnasium at 4503 Dennie St., Hanmer. This project was initiated by École Notre-Dame teacher and black belt holder in Kuk Sool – Hapkido, Mr. Robert Tremblay. Kuk Sool – Hapkido style is a mix of traditional and modern martial arts. It includes self-defence techniques, conditioning movements, martial arts demonstration techniques and competition training.

“I believe training in martial arts is a great way to encourage students to be active,” explained

Mr. Robert Tremblay, teacher at École Notre-Dame. “It is also an efficient way to teach discipline and self-control. I am very proud of my students. They worked hard to earn their yellow belts.”

The students' presentation will be followed by a demonstration by Valley East Family Martial Arts Centre (VEFMAC) Club members, who will show more advanced forms and techniques. It is with a special permission from the VEFMAC club and its owner Mr. Charles Coutu that students are able to receive their yellow belt. Mr. Coutu is also a teacher for the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario currently teaching at Collège Notre-Dame (Sudbury).
