Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) secondary schools stood tall at the Regional Cardboard Boat Race competition, taking home three medals. Some 30 Northern Ontario teams from various communities took part in the challenge.

Wawa’s École secondaire Saint-Joseph team made up of Démily Thibodeau-Bello, Patrick Chevrier, Aiden Laing and Kalev Trudeau placed first at the November 22 North-Western Competition in Thunder based on their ability to build a quick and sturdy cardboard boat. Their vessel navigated 25 metres in 17.2 seconds and carried a load of 280 kilograms.

The regional competition continued in Espanola on November 28. École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur (Sudbury) brought home a second place, while third place was claimed by École secondaire catholique Champlain (Chelmsford). ÉS Sacré-Coeur’s team of Logan Hood, Nia Gauthier and Luc Demers was a standout due to the speed and sturdiness of their boat, which travelled 25 metres in 17.81 seconds and had the capacity to carry a 204-kilogram load. The boat, constructed by ÉSC Champlain’s team and comprised of Éric Bergeron, Mathieu Dequanne, Hunter Gristey and Adam Dionne, completed the 25-metre course in 23.84 seconds and carried a load of 264 kilograms.

The winning teams from École secondaire Saint-Joseph, École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur and École secondaire catholique Champlain will travel to Waterloo in March to take part in the Provincial Cardboard Boat Races.

The competition for students from grades 7 to 12 is hosted by Skills Canada, and requires each participating team to design and build a cardboard boat. Students are evaluated on the design and construction quality of their boats, as well as on teamwork, organization, security, creativity, team spirit and the speed and resistance of their vessels. In addition to seeing how well their cardboard boats performed in water over a distance of 25 metres, the teams took part in a load challenge to determine how long their boats could carry a maximum number of teammates without sinking.

ÉSC l’Horizon (Val Caron) and Collège Notre-Dame (Sudbury) also took part in the Regional Cardboard Boat Races.

The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality learning environment and academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students enrolled in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
