Three students from École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur (Sudbury) had the unique opportunity to live unforgettable experiences, thanks to their membership in the Royal Canadian Army Cadets program. The three students, selected from among their peers, were participants in three meaningful expeditions.

Cadets

Markus Valtonen was one of only four Ontario cadets selected for the National Army Cadet Expedition Yukon Gold. The expedition, which took place from September 6 to 19, 2017, began in Whitehorse, Yukon, where 18 cadets from across Canada embarked on a 415 km canoe trip on the Yukon River, all the way to Dawson City. They then made their way to Tombstone Territorial Park, where they participated in various hikes. The experience enabled Markus to develop his teamwork and leadership skills.

Logan Wood, member of the 2912 Sudbury Irish Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, was one of only 26 cadets chosen from all parts of Canada to take part in the September 2017, Madawaska expedition. The expedition included a 30 km hike, a 70 km bicycle ride and a 50 km canoe trip passing through several rapids. It was a truly memorable experience for Logan.

For his part, Benjamin Lemay was selected for this year’s Trillium expedition, which focused on fostering leadership and collaborative skills. Participants were required to travel 23 km on foot along Algonquin Provincial Park trails, then complete a 180 km two-day bicycle journey and finish their trek with a 20-km canoe trip. It was a wonderful opportunity for Benjamin that helped advance his leadership skills and cultivate friendships that are sure to last a lifetime.
