April 6, 2017
Students and staff at École Ste-Marie (25 Marier St., Azilda) will take part in One Day Without Shoes Day on Thursday, April 13, by taking part in awareness activities that will begin with a rally in the gymnasium at 9:15 a.m. and conclude at the end of the school day. Members of the media are invited to come and meet with the students at their school.
All wearing black, dark blue, dark green, red and violet t-shirts created specifically for this day, École Ste-Marie students and staff will spend their school day in their socks. While they will not be obliged to walk barefoot outside the school building in the snow or on rocks, students will be made aware of the discomfort of being shoeless for a day.
Their participation in One Day without Shoes will help students better understand the fact that millions of people, mainly in developing countries, cannot afford a good pair of shoes. While vulnerable to the spread of infections and serious diseases, children without shoes cannot go to school.
In an effort to make a difference, École Ste-Marie students and staff will collect shoes until April 21, 2017. They will be donated to Soles 4 Souls, a not-for-profit organization committed to fighting poverty through the collection and distribution of shoes and clothing in many countries.
